Paris Salons, Art Dealers, Galleries, Critics and the Evolution of Art from 1886 to 1914

We will start with a brief overview of Impressionism and information about the different salons, art dealers, galleries, critics and magazines, mostly in Paris. We'll see the evolution of art after the earthquake caused by Impressionism, and the scandals that accompanied this evolution, as seen in the art exhibitions in Paris and some European salons (Vienna, Dresden, Munich) between 1886 and 1914.

The first part, covering 1886 and 1905, will be about Neo-Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, with Seurat, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. The second part, between 1905 and 1914, will cover Fauvism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Cubism and Abstract Art, with Matisse, Klimt, Modigliani, Picasso and Kandinsky. Images and some videos will accompany the lecture.

Nicolas J. Boulaine, born in Béziers, France, entered the University of Orient, Cumaná, Venezuela in 1969. He is a retired tenured professor, has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Ateneo de Cumaná, Professor of Sacred Art, lecturer with extensive experience and translator for the Research Council. He has held various chairs in universities and is the author of several books. His newest, on the history of painting, is yet to be published.
